Hex to Octal

Hex to octal converts one hexadecimal number, including a fractional part, with calculation steps.

All input digits are converted. No fractional-place cutoff, rounding or truncation is applied.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert hex to octal?

Enter one hexadecimal number and select Convert to octal. Each hex digit becomes four binary bits. Starting at the point, regroup the bits in threes and replace each group with an octal digit. Open Calculation steps to see both stages for your input.

Does this hexadecimal to octal converter accept fractions?

Yes. For example, 2AF.6 produces 1257.3. Before the point, 2AF expands to 0010 1010 1111, which groups as 001 010 101 111. After the point, 6 expands to 0110, which groups as 011 000 after right padding. The octal result 1257.30 has the same value as 1257.3.

Why are zeros added or removed?

Incomplete integer groups receive zeros on the left, while incomplete fractional groups receive zeros on the right. These padding zeros do not change the value. Leading integer zeros and trailing fractional zeros are then omitted from the result. Zeros inside the number remain. An all-zero input produces 0.

How many octal fractional places are kept?

Every fractional hex digit is processed. Finite hexadecimal fractions have finite octal expansions, so this page uses no rounding or fractional-place cutoff separate from the input limit. Output has no 0o prefix.

Can I use lowercase letters, spaces or a prefix?

Yes. Both uppercase and lowercase A–F are accepted. An optional leading plus or minus sign and optional 0x prefix are accepted. Whitespace groups one number and is removed: 2 A F.6 means 2AF.6, not a batch. A leading or trailing point is accepted when at least one hex digit is present. A negative result uses a minus sign, not a fixed-width two's-complement representation.

What input is rejected and what is the limit?

Use hexadecimal digits 0–9 and A–F with the optional syntax above. Commas, octal prefixes and multiple points are rejected. A binary prefix is not recognized: 0b is read as the hexadecimal value B, not as a binary prefix. This page does not interpret scientific notation: E is a hexadecimal digit. For example, 1E2 is a hex integer, not a decimal number multiplied by a power of ten. Invalid input clears the previous result. The limit is one number per run, at most 1,000 hex digits and 10,000 total input characters including whitespace.

Does this decode hex into text or colors?

No. It converts the numeric value of the entire input into octal, not bytes into characters or color channels. For the reverse direction use Octal to Hex. For a decimal result use Hex to Decimal. For hexadecimal and binary integers use Hex to Binary.

Do I need an account or upload anything?

No. Calculation and copying run locally in your browser. The tool does not transmit the input. There is no batch mode or saved conversion history.
