Octal to Hex

Octal to hex converts one octal number, including a fractional part, to uppercase hexadecimal with calculation steps.

All input digits are converted. No fractional-place cutoff, rounding or truncation is applied.

    Frequently asked questions

How do I convert octal to hex?

Enter one octal number and select Convert to hex. Each octal digit first becomes three binary bits. Regroup those bits in fours starting at the point, then replace each group with a hexadecimal digit. Open Calculation steps to see both stages for your input.

Does this octal to hexadecimal converter accept fractions?

Yes. For example, 725.34 produces 1D5.7. Before the point, 725 expands to binary 111010101, which groups as 0001 1101 0101. After the point, 34 expands to 011100, which groups as 0111 0000. The hexadecimal value is 1D5.70; omitting the trailing fractional zero gives 1D5.7.

Why are zeros added or removed?

Incomplete integer groups receive zeros on the left; incomplete fractional groups receive zeros on the right. That padding does not change the numeric value. The result then omits leading integer zeros and trailing fractional zeros. Zeros inside the value remain. An all-zero input produces 0.

How many hexadecimal fractional places are kept?

All fractional octal digits are processed. A finite octal fraction has a finite hexadecimal expansion, so there is no rounding or fractional-place limit separate from the input limit. Output letters are uppercase, without a 0x prefix.

Can I use spaces, a prefix or a minus sign?

Yes. Whitespace groups one number and is removed: 7 2 5.3 4 means 725.34, not a batch. An optional leading plus or minus sign and optional 0o prefix are accepted. A leading or trailing point is accepted when at least one digit is present. Negative values use a minus sign rather than a fixed-width two's-complement representation.

Which inputs are rejected and what is the limit?

Use octal digits 0–7. Digits 8 and 9, commas, exponent notation, hexadecimal or binary prefixes and multiple points are rejected. An error clears the old result. One number is processed per run, with at most 1,000 octal digits and 10,000 total input characters including whitespace.

Is this converting text or file bytes?

No. This page converts the numeric value of the whole input. It does not interpret character codes, decode files or process colors. For a binary result use Octal to Binary; for a decimal result use Octal to Decimal. For hexadecimal and binary integers use Hex to Binary.

Do I need an account or upload anything?

No. Conversion and copying run locally in your browser. The tool does not transmit the input. There is no batch mode or saved conversion history.
